Commissioned by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) as part of the Scottish Right to Speak initiative, CALL Scotland has produced a series of 2 online learning modules on Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Aimed at services, teams or individuals to review their current knowledge and develop best practice, and to ensure positive outcomes for people who use AAC.
The first series, at an introductory level, is accessible to people without any previous specialised knowledge of communication disability, or of communication aids, and is useful for staff, students or carers in a variety of disciplines.
The modules are linked to the IPAACKS framework for identifying staff learning and development needs, with modules 2-5 showing the 'Core Values and Commitments' and 'AAC Specific Knowledge and Skills' that are particularly relevant to that module topic.

This second and larger series is written for staff and students working in education, and addresses many aspects of how to introduce and support the use of AAC in educational settings. It assumes some previous knowledge of communication disability and communication aids, covered in the series 1 modules.
Suitable for addressing the learning and development needs of staff requiring IPAACKS framework - AAC Specific Knowledge and Skills level 1 and 2, however some content informing levels 3 and 4.
Divided into 7 comprehensive modules, module 1 - Setting the Scene should always be completed first, but thereafter others can be viewed individually or in any order.

An Introduction to AAC Assessment. This module helps people understand the components of an AAC assessment, the role of clients, families and professionals, and when to seek support for AAC assessment.
AAC Assessment Module 2. This module consists of six chapters, looking at: people who might use AAC; understanding types of assessment; AAC assessment techniques; contributing to AAC assessment; access methods; measuring change.
